WHAT SHOULD YOU SAY?
1. Speak from the heart
Tell your friends and family why this is important to you and why you would like them to join you in this effort. Share any personal connection you have with the project including a scripture or story.
2. Limit your requests but not your dream
Your letter should share one to three things that you hope will be funded. This gives the person an idea of the difference that their donation will make. “We are asking for your help in sending up to ### children to Vacation Bible School. It will cost approximately $35 for each child to be transported, fed, cared for and loved by our VBS Team. How many children can thank you for that gift?” Or, “We hope to secure ### vaccinations for as many children as possible. The more money we raise the more children will be treated.”
3. Remember your audience
While not everyone can give a large donation, some can and will. Help them understand that their money is needed and the gift worthwhile. “The more we raise, the more good that we, with God’s help, can accomplish.” (Typically, one donation will be submitted for every two letters mailed.)
4. Provide information and visuals
Tell your audience when, where, and what. (why is in #1) Provide some facts such as the dates of the trip, who is going, where we will be and what we plan to do. (Provide a Medical Clinic for the community, staff and run a VBS Camp for 1,500 children, educate and inspire through Leadership Workshops, Construction Projects etc.) Share the website for Raise the Roof Academy introducing them to the need that is present and the impact Raise the Roof Academy is having. Use the logo in your correspondence. http://www.raisetheroofacademy.org/
5. Give them the tools
Provide a self-addressed envelope in each letter. This will allow you to keep a record of the donations. Checks should be made payable to Raise the Roof Academy and qualify as a tax-deductible, charitable donation. Thank you notes and photos will be sent to the donors after the trip is completed. If checks are written to you, they will not receive a charitable tax receipt.
6. Give thanks for each giver and ask for their prayers as you travel to Uganda to love God’s people.
