managing expectations

We all carry expectations about a place that is “far away” as far as Bwasandeku-Kalungu, Uganda or the few communities we will visit. These expectations can vary about what cuisine will be available to eat, what challenges we will face, what changes we will affect etc. What are some expectations that you harbor as a member of the Mission Team? How are those expectations guiding and facilitating your thoughts, actions, and meditations in these days leading up to the departure date? How are those expectations inhibiting your thoughts, actions, and meditations as you prepare? What standards or method of measurement are you using to assess/evaluate your response(s) to those expectations? Present these things in prayer, as a way of removing any barriers between yourself and the Holy Spirit, so that you open yourself up to the possibility of change -- ready yourself to be transformed by compassionate living, love for justice and God’s grace. As we prepare, I invite you to spend time praying for the children and the community. acceptance & celebrating We are one team and one group working in many ways. Remember, you are on this mission with a vast team of brothers and sisters who love you and want to serve you as you serve the people of Uganda. The people we will meet might share gifts with you because you are a guest and not because they expect anything from you. The greatest gift is the village school that is serving the children from the community. You will see this in the expressions of the people as you are received with great joy and enthusiasm. This will not be because of anything which sets you a part from them. Rather, the people already consider you as one of them and your visit is like a homecoming event. They have your name and the kids have been praying for you. When you are presented with food it is most polite to eat whatever is offered. However, please feel free to pass on food you do not feel comfortable eating and give a polite excuse. In case a family gives you gifts, please take them even if it is an animal. The local RTR team will help you sort through the details.
