money

It is important that you bring cash. We will exchange money in Kampala before we head out to the village. Bring crisp un-torn US dollar notes ONLY. (Anything else is costly, if not impossible, to change.) Only bring $100 bills, lower notes are typically not exchanged. Make sure your US dollar notes are printed after 2009. The currency is the Uganda Shilling.

Credit cards are accepted in only a few locations. Bring them only for emergency use. Remember to notify your credit card/debit card company about your travel dates. Personal checks are not accepted and are dangerous due to the fact that they can be “washed” and rewritten for huge amounts. Traveler’s Checks are difficult to cash, and are charged at a low exchange rate.

Excursions

You will be responsible for paying for any excursions you might be interested in taking. Prices are dependent on how many people will be participating. Please let us know if you are interested in taking an excursion and our Uganda Team will let you know the pricing. We need to know this before the end of May. We encourage you to bring a rain-poncho and a pair of binoculars for bird-sighting.

The web links to potential excursions are:

  • Paraa Lodge and Safari: https://paraalodge.com/

  • Uganda Wildlife Education Center: http://uwec.ug/

  • Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary: https://ngambaisland.org/

  • Nile River Explorers: https://www.raftafrica.com/

Please keep in mind that RTRA is not a travel company. We offer to coordinate an excursion for the team, but we do not have staffing to coordinate multiple excursions or special travel requests.
