In regard to money it is important not to see every problem or need as a monetarily based solution. The fact is, on the ground we will see many children and families who are in great need. Also, we will see people who are full of hope and courage. In spite of all the daily challenges of living in rural Uganda, the majority of the people exude joy and live as though everything is well and that the promise of the future is guaranteed. We will see or hear of situations that might break our hearts to want to help. We might feel called to make a difference, or someone will approach us to help them in their very visible and obvious need. For any visiting team from America, or anywhere in the Western world, the greatest challenge is always about seeing ways one can help, while also honoring the local processes and systems of advocacy and community service.
I encourage you to be listening to how Christ, by God’s Spirit, will be speaking to you and to the entire team. I pray that you will know that you have already taken the most critical step which is, you have chosen to visit and serve with the people of Uganda. You have chosen to forge a prayerful relationship with the community and through this process of preparation you have worked hard to share their stories even before meeting them in person. All of us at Raise the Roof know that this is a long journey and one of hope and love.
