accommodations
We will stay in guest houses, and travel by buses.
When visiting Raise the Roof Academy, we will be staying in Masaka at Hotel Brovad and every morning we will make the 45-minute commute to Bwasandeku.
In Kampala, we will be staying at the Apricot Guest House:
At the guest houses in Kampala and Masaka, we will have access to flushing toilets, hot showers, and semi-western motel experiences. During the day, depending on where we are, our only restroom may only be a pit-latrine. Some things, such as using a pit-latrine, may seem a little challenging at first, but as the days pass you will find it less challenging and it’s all a part of the experience!
food & water
We will have a team preparing our lunches and dinners and providing bottled water. Our meals range between rice, potatoes, beef, chicken, pork, fish, pineapple, watermelon, bread, bananas, papaya etc. Bottled water will always be provided for drinking and brushing teeth. We want you to be healthy and strong so you can have a good time. Please bring antacids in case you get an upset stomach. Remember, eating new foods with rare oils might trigger a stomach problem. You will have the opportunity to try many interesting and unique foods during the traditional meal, which will be prepared by the Raise the Roof host families. It may not suit your tastes, but please receive it as a heartwarming token of gratitude and be considerate of their hard work in preparing these meals. Please drink a lot of water and always carry a water bottle in your back-pack.
